This all-time favorite demonstrates the American genius for combining flavors. To dress it up, add slices of avocado and some bean sprouts, substitute brioche for the white bread, or slip in some thinly sliced cooked shrimp or lobster.
Lay out on a work surface:
8 slices crisp dry white toast
Spread the bread lightly on one side with:
About 3 tablespoons Mayonnaise (total)
Divide among 4 slices, spread side up:
2 beefsteak tomatoes or other meaty tomatoes, sliced about 1/4 inch thick
8 Bibb lettuce leaves, red-leaf lettuce leaves, or Boston lettuce leaves
12 slices bacon, cooked until crisp
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Top with the remaining 4 slices toast, press together gently, and serve.
